Rancer Island (also spelled Rancer or Ranser Island) is a beautiful, relatively untouched island located in Pong Dam Lake (Maharana Pratap Sagar), in Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh (HP), India.
It’s part of the Pong Dam Wildlife Sanctuary / Bird Sanctuary area, known for its stunning blend of blue waters and lush green landscapes, often described as a “hidden gem” or “untouched paradise” in the Himalayas.
Key Features
- Scenery: Crystal-clear lake waters surrounding dense greenery, grasslands, and forested areas. It offers serene views with the Dhauladhar mountain range in the background.
- Wildlife: Home to various bird species and several exotic/rare reptiles. The broader Pong Lake is a Ramsar site famous for migratory birds (like Bar-headed Geese in winter).
- Vibe: Peaceful and adventurous, with potential for nature walks, birdwatching, and exploration. Some visitors compare its beauty to places like the Andamans.
How to Reach Rancer Island
- By Boat: The standard way is a 20-minute boat ride from Khatiyar (a point on the lake with watersports options and clifftop views).
- Access can vary with water levels — sometimes the lake level drops enough that parts become reachable by vehicle or bike from nearby wetlands (e.g., near Nagrota Surian), but boat is the reliable option.
- Getting to Pong Dam area:
- Nearest airport: Gaggal (Kangra) ≈ 76 km.
- Nearest major rail: Pathankot Cantt. ≈ 70 km.
- By road: Well-connected from Dharamshala (≈55 km), Chandigarh, etc.
Note: Roads to the Pong Dam area can be rough in places, and facilities on the island itself are limited (it’s more of a nature spot than a developed tourist hub).
