Rajgundha Valley

Category Adventure, Natural / Scenic beauty

Rajgundha Valley (also spelled Rajgundha or Raj Gunda) is a remote, untouched Himalayan valley and small traditional village in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, India. It lies in the Chota Bhangal region at an altitude of approximately 2,700–2,770 meters (8,850–9,100 ft) above sea level.

Nestled between the majestic Dhauladhar mountain ranges, the valley is surrounded by dense deodar (cedar) and pine forests, green meadows, the flowing Uhl River, and snow-capped peaks. It is often called a “hidden gem” or “secret paradise” of Himachal because of its peaceful, less-commercialized vibe and stunning natural beauty.

Many travelers combine it with a trip to Bir-Billing (famous for paragliding) and Barot Valley.

Key Highlights

  • Scenic Beauty: Crystal-clear views of Dhauladhar peaks, turquoise river waters, traditional Himachali wooden houses, high-altitude pastures, and star-filled night skies (great for Milky Way photography).
  • Atmosphere: Extremely quiet with minimal crowds, perfect for nature lovers, solitude seekers, and those wanting an offbeat experience.
  • Activities:
    • Short walks and nature trails along the Uhl River.
    • Trekking: Billing to Rajgundha (12–14 km, 5–6 hours, moderate to hard), onward to Plachak Valley, Thamsar Pass, or towards Bara Bhangal.
    • Photography, birdwatching, and experiencing local Gaddi shepherd culture.
  • Nearby Spots: Kukkar Gundha, Badagran, Nahlota villages, and the Barot-Rajgundha circuit (can be done as a scenic loop).

Current Status (as of 2026)

Rajgundha remains relatively undeveloped and pristine. A few basic homestays, guesthouses, and camps (including options like Zostel-style stays) are available. The road from Billing side is narrow and partially off-road; the last stretch often requires a sturdy vehicle or short trek. In winter (Dec–Mar), heavy snowfall closes most access routes.

Best Time to Visit

  • March to June and September to October: Ideal (pleasant weather, green landscapes, clear views).
  • Monsoon (July–August): Lush but risky due to landslides and heavy rains — avoid if possible.
  • Winter: Snow-covered but access is very difficult; roads and treks are often closed.
