Nurpur Fort

Category Historic, Natural / Scenic beauty, Others

Nurpur Fort (also known as Dhameri Fort in earlier times) is a historic ruined fort located in the town of Nurpur, Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh. It is a protected monument of national importance under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and stands as a testimony to the rich heritage of the Pathania Rajputs.

History

The fort traces its origins to the 11th century (around 1064 AD), when the Nurpur kingdom (formerly called Dhameri) was founded by Raja Jhet Pal (or Jit Pal), a Tomar Rajput related to the rulers of Delhi. The Pathania dynasty ruled the region for several centuries.

The town was renamed Nurpur after Mughal Empress Nur Jahan visited the place and was enchanted by its beauty. During its peak in the late 16th and early 17th century under Raja Basu Dev and his successors, the fort gained prominence. It witnessed many battles, Mughal influence, and later damage during British times as well as in the 1905 earthquake.

The fort complex includes remnants of palaces, courts, and other structures. Inside the fort is the historic Brij Raj Swami Temple (also called Brijraj Temple), built in the 16th century. It is unique as one of the few places where idols of Lord Krishna and Meera Bai are worshipped together. The temple features beautiful carvings depicting Krishna Leela.

Architecture and Features

  • The fort is built on a strategic hillock/cliff overlooking the Jabbar river, offering scenic views of the surrounding area and distant mountains.
  • It showcases a blend of Hindu and Mughal architectural styles with intricate stone carvings, bas-reliefs, and faded miniature paintings on the walls.
  • The complex once included royal quarters, Diwan-e-Khaas (audience hall), administrative areas, and even a jail in later periods.
  • A notable feature is the ancient Maulshri tree (over 400 years old in some accounts) and water bodies within the precinct.
  • The structure is now in a ruined but charming state, with thick walls still standing in parts.
