Dal Lake
Dal Lake (also called Dal Lake Dharamshala or Dal Lake McLeod Ganj) is a small, scenic mid-altitude lake in Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh, India. It sits at about 1,775 meters (5,823 ft) above sea level near the village of Tota Rani (sometimes associated with Naddi area), surrounded by lush deodar (cedar) forests and mountains.
It’s named after the famous Dal Lake in Srinagar, Kashmir, but much smaller (around 1 hectare or 10,000 sq m). The area offers peaceful natural beauty, and many visitors combine it with a trip to nearby McLeod Ganj (the upper part of Dharamshala, home to the Dalai Lama).
Key Highlights
- Location & Distance:
- ~11 km from main Dharamshala town.
- ~2–3 km west of McLeod Ganj bazaar (a short walk or quick drive along the McLeodganj-Naddi road).
Attractions:
- Serene lake views with reflections of deodar trees and hills.
- Ancient Lord Shiva temple on the banks.
- Good for short walks, photography, and peaceful time in nature. Some boating may be available when water levels are high.
- Nearby: Naddi viewpoint is often visited together.
Current Status (as of early 2026)
The lake is prone to drying up or having very low water levels, especially in winter and dry seasons. Recent visitor reviews (e.g., January 2026) describe it as a muddy pond or dry basin rather than a full lake, with some construction or maintenance work noted. Water levels improve during monsoon/rainy season, making it more picturesque then. Locals have raised concerns about the lake’s condition, with occasional fish rescue efforts when it shrinks.
It can still be a pleasant short stop for the surrounding forests, temple, and mountain views, but set expectations accordingly — it’s not always the “lake experience” shown in older photos.
Best Time to Visit
- May to October: Generally recommended (pleasant weather, greener surroundings). Monsoon can make it lush and misty, though rains may affect roads.
- A Dal Fair is sometimes held in August/September on the banks.
- Winters: Can be dry/cold with possible snow on higher peaks; lake often shrinks.
- Avoid if you’re specifically hoping for a full, boatable lake without checking recent conditions.
How to Reach
- From Dharamshala: Local bus, taxi, or auto (~8–11 km, 20–40 minutes).
- From McLeod Ganj: Easy 2–3 km walk or short taxi ride (often on the way to Naddi viewpoint).
- Nearest Airport: Gaggal (Kangra) Airport (~10–15 km from Dharamshala).
- By Road: Well-connected from Delhi (~500 km), Pathankot, or Chandigarh. Taxis and buses are readily available.
Entry: Free. Open most of the day (roughly 7 AM–8 PM, but accessible as a natural spot).
