Hanumangarh Trek (also called Hanuman Garh Trek) is a beautiful and rewarding short trek near Bir-Billing in Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh. It is one of the most popular day treks in the area, offering panoramic mountain views and a sense of adventure.

Key Details

  • Altitude: Approximately 3,200 meters (10,500 feet)
  • Trek Distance: 6–9 km one way (depending on starting point); round trip usually 12–18 km
  • Duration: 3–5 hours one way (full day trek including drive)
  • Difficulty: Easy to Moderate (beginner-friendly via the shorter route)
  • Elevation Gain: Around 1,500–2,000 meters depending on the route

Why It’s Special

  • The trek ends at the ruins of an ancient Hanumangarh Fort (or temple site) perched high on a ridge in the Dhauladhar range.
  • From the top, you get stunning 360-degree views of the Dhauladhar mountains, Kangra Valley, Rajgundha Valley, Thamser Pass, Jalsu Pass, Chhina Pass, and sometimes distant peaks.
  • The trail passes through dense forests of deodar (cedar), oak, rhododendron, blue pine, and silver fir. You may spot birds and enjoy peaceful Himalayan scenery.
  • Many locals associate the place with Lord Hanuman, giving it a sacred and positive vibe.

Main Routes

  1. Easiest & Most Popular Route (via Chhina/Chenna Pass): Drive from Bir to Chhina Pass (about 22–28 km, 1.5 hours). From there, a short steep trek of 3–6 km (2–3 hours uphill) to the top. This is rocky and steep in parts but suitable for beginners.
  2. Via Bari Village: Longer (around 9 km one way) and moderately difficult, passing through thicker forest.
  3. From Rajgundha Valley: Another scenic option, slightly longer but very rewarding.

Most people do it as a day trek with a drive to the starting point. Some organized tours include camping at the top or combining it with paragliding in Billing.

Best Time to Visit

  • March to June and September to November/December — clear skies and good trail conditions.
  • It can be done year-round, but winters (December–February) may have snow, making it more challenging and beautiful for experienced trekkers.
  • April–June is ideal for pleasant weather and avoiding heavy monsoon rains.
