Category Historic, Natural / Scenic beauty, Others, Religious

The Norbulingka Institute (also known as Norbulingka Institute of Tibetan Culture) is a beautiful cultural and artistic centre located in Sidhpur, near Dharamshala, Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh. It is dedicated to preserving and promoting traditional Tibetan arts, crafts, literature, and culture in exile. The name “Norbulingka” means “Treasure Garden” or “Jewelled Park,” inspired by the historic summer palace of the Dalai Lamas in Lhasa, Tibet.

History and Significance

Founded in 1995 by Kelsang Yeshi (a former minister in the Tibetan government-in-exile) and his wife Kim Yeshi, the institute was inaugurated by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. Its primary goal is to safeguard endangered Tibetan artistic traditions by training young artists under master craftsmen, providing employment to the Tibetan refugee community (over 300 people), and raising global awareness of Tibetan heritage. It balances traditional techniques with modern needs while supporting community and family values.

The institute includes art studios, an academy for Tibetan studies, a research department (which has worked on the official biography of the Dalai Lama), workshops, a temple, and a doll museum. All proceeds from sales and entry fees support cultural preservation efforts.

Monument and Features

The campus is set in serene, landscaped Japanese-style gardens with meandering paths, ponds, small waterfalls, colorful flower beds, prayer flags, and views of the Dhauladhar Himalayas. Traditional Tibetan architecture features prominently in the buildings.

Key highlights:

  • Deden Tsuglakhang (Seat of Happiness Temple): A stunning two-storey temple with intricate murals (including 1,173 images of Buddha and scenes from the life of the Dalai Lamas), frescoes, and a large 4-meter gilded copper statue of Sakyamuni Buddha.
