Thatharna Trek
Thatharna Trek is a beautiful, lesser-known alternative to the crowded Triund Trek in the Dharamshala region of Himachal Pradesh, India. It offers lush green meadows, dense deodar forests, and stunning 360-degree panoramic views of the Dhauladhar range, Kangra Valley, Shivalik hills, and distant plains of Punjab.
The campsite sits at an altitude of around 2,500–2,750 meters (approx. 8,200–9,000 feet). Many trekkers consider it a hidden gem because it is quieter, has excellent camping spots, and provides clearer, sharper mountain views.
Key Trek Details
- Distance: Approximately 5–7 km one way (10–14 km round trip). Some sources list it as 6.2 miles (10 km) out-and-back.
- Elevation Gain: Roughly 900–1,300 meters, depending on the exact starting point.
- Difficulty: Easy to Moderate (some sections feel steep and tiring). Suitable for beginners with good fitness, but more challenging than Triund due to the continuous ascent and less-defined trail in parts.
- Duration: 3–5 hours one way (5–8 hours round trip). With breaks and photography, plan for a full day. Many people do it as a 1 Night / 2 Days trek with camping at the top.
- Trail Highlights:
- Path through forests, villages, and open meadows.
- Panoramic views of snow-capped Dhauladhar peaks and the Kangra Valley below.
- Excellent spot for sunrise, sunset, and star-gazing.
- Base camp for further treks like Kundli Pass (4,550 m).
- Peaceful atmosphere with very little crowd compared to Triund.
Starting Point and Route
The trek usually starts from Kharota Village (also called Khadota or Kharota Hill View Point), about 8–15 km from Dharamshala (via Khaniyara). You can reach Kharota easily by taxi, bike, or local transport.
The trail begins with a gradual climb through forested areas and then becomes steeper. It passes through some clearings before reaching the spacious meadow at Thatharna Top, which is ideal for pitching tents.
Best Time to Visit
- Ideal Seasons: March to June (pleasant weather and blooming meadows) and September to November (clear post-monsoon views).
- Avoid heavy monsoon (July–August) due to slippery trails and landslide risks.
- Winter brings snow on the upper sections — beautiful but requires proper gear and experience.
Dharamshala has mild summers and cold winters; the summit will be significantly cooler.
Practical Tips
- Fitness: Good cardiovascular fitness and leg strength are needed for the steep sections. Not ideal for complete beginners without preparation.
- Essentials: Carry plenty of water (limited sources on the trail), snacks, rain gear, sunscreen, trekking shoes, headlamp, and warm layers for the night.
- Camping: Highly recommended! The top has open meadows perfect for tents. Many organized groups provide tents, sleeping bags, dinner, and bonfire.
- Guide: Strongly suggested for safety and navigation, especially if camping overnight.
- Safety: Check weather forecasts, go in a group if possible, and follow Leave No Trace principles.
