Bhagsunag Temple and Waterfall
The Bhagsunag Temple is an ancient Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva (as Bhageshwar) and the serpent deity Bhagsunag. According to legend, a king named Bhagsu fought the Nag Devta, was defeated, sought forgiveness, and the site was later blessed. The temple features traditional Himachali architecture with a prominent white shikhara (spire) and is surrounded by deodar trees and mountain views.
In front of the temple lies a large sacred pool (kund) fed by a perennial natural spring through three pipes. Many devotees and tourists take a holy dip here, believing the cold spring water has healing properties. There are separate areas for men and women.
Bhagsunag Temple and Waterfall (also spelled Bhagsunag or Bhagsunath) is one of the most popular and easily accessible attractions in McLeod Ganj, Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh. It beautifully combines ancient spiritual significance with refreshing natural scenery at the foothills of the Dhauladhar mountains.
Bhagsunag Waterfall
Just a short 500–1,000 meter (15–30 minute) easy-to-moderate walk/trek behind the temple is the Bhagsu Waterfall (about 20–30 meters high). The trail is well-marked, with some paved sections, small cafes, and stalls along the way. At the base, you can enjoy the cascading water, rocky pools, and lush greenery. A small temple or shrine built by war veterans adds a spiritual touch at the base.
The waterfall’s flow varies:
- Strongest and most dramatic during monsoon (July–September).
- Moderate and pleasant in spring/summer (March–June).
- Reduced to a trickle in late winter (February–March).
Current Status (as of March 2026)
The temple and pool area are well-maintained and open to visitors of all faiths. The waterfall trail remains popular, though water flow is currently moderate (not at its peak). The path is generally safe but can be slippery after rain — wear good shoes. Weekends and holidays see more crowds.

- July to September: Waterfall looks spectacular (but expect rain and possible slippery trails).
