Shri Jawalamukhi Mata Temple (also known as Jawala Devi Temple or Jawalamukhi Temple) is one of the most revered 51 Shakti Peethas in India. It is located in Jawalamukhi, Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh, nestled in the picturesque Shivalik hills.

Significance and History

This temple is dedicated to Goddess Jawalamukhi (meaning “flaming mouth” or “one with a fiery face”), a fierce manifestation of Goddess Durga/Shakti. According to Hindu mythology, it is the sacred site where the tongue of Goddess Sati fell after Lord Shiva carried her body in grief following her self-immolation at King Daksha’s yajna. Here, the Goddess manifests not as a traditional idol but as eternal natural flames (jyotis) that burn continuously from rock crevices in the sanctum sanctorum. There are typically nine flames, each representing different forms of the Goddess.

The temple has no conventional murti (idol) of the Devi; devotees offer prayers directly to the sacred flames, which are considered her divine presence. Historical accounts mention that the Pandavas originally built or renovated the temple, with later contributions from rulers like Maharaja Ranjit Singh. It is also famous for a legend involving Mughal Emperor Akbar, who reportedly tried to extinguish the flames but failed, after which he acknowledged the divine power and made offerings.
